If you have ever been locked out of your home, you know just how frustrating it can be. One thing you can do to avoid a lockout situation is to have a spare key made and hide it in an inconspicuous location for when you might need it. This can be a good idea, especially if you are prone to locking yourself out or forgetting your keys. However, finding a unique place to keep that key – a place where no one would ever think to look – isn’t as easy as you might think.
If someone were trying to gain access to your home, leaving a key under the welcome mat is as good as broadcasting, “Come on in and make yourself at home!” Hiding that spare key in a potted plant, in decorative foam “key rock” or on the window ledge isn’t much better.
Try Hiding Your Key in Some of These Unconventional Areas
Have a spare key, where can you keep it safe and readily available is critical during a lockout. Of course, our Locksmith Professionals are only a phone call away; however, some of these unconventional suggestions could save you a phone call and unexpected bill:
- Behind a strip of vinyl siding
- In a dog house
- In a bird house
- Inside the zippered cushion of an outdoor patio chair
- Inside an external air conditioner unit
- On your car in a magnetic key box
- Inside the BBQ grill
- Attached to an outdoor wind chime
- Under a pot on your neighbor’s porch
- Under a bicycle or tricycle seat
- With a trusted neighbor
Keep in mind that hiding a key outdoors means that it becomes subject to the elements. Rain, freeze/thaw cycles, and time can cause the key to become unusable. Corrosion, rust, and exposure could cause your hidden key to fail when you need it most. Check the condition of your spare keys often, and replace and re-hide as needed.
Use Your Hidden Spare Key for Emergencies Only!
Wherever you hide that key, be sure it doesn’t become your “go to” key to unlock your door. The idea is to use it only when necessary and when that time comes, it’s a good idea to find a new hiding spot. If others see you frequently using your hidden key to open your door, it is no longer a secret.
Remember that the goal is to make sure you can access your home when the unexpected – such as getting locked out – happens. You never want to make it easy for others to let themselves in without an invitation.
