As if being a property manager or landlord isn’t hard enough, there is always the matter of the many ways renters can find to lock themselves out. Of course, anywhere there are people, doors and locks, the chance that someone will get locked out at some point in their tenancy is a given.
Any responsible landlord will make time to respond to their renters’ pleas for assistance before the renter break a window or door to get themselves out of their predicament on their own. Many landlords do charge their renters a fee for responding to lockout calls, but most would rather not have to deal with this kind of hassle in the first place.
While there is a limited amount of things that can be done to prevent every lockout from occurring, landlords can make it lockouts easier on the renters by removing self-locking door knobs.
What’s a Self-Locking Door Knob?
You may know them as “keyed privacy locks” and they are actually quite common. Simply put, a self-locking doorknob is one that automatically locks behind you when exiting. Designed to save time, they can actually do just the opposite for someone who hasn’t planned ahead and carried a key with them on the way out the door. That split second between the latch closing and awareness of, “Oh no, I forgot my keys!” is a great example of human nature and as a landlord, one you are far too familiar with.
The Simple Solution
There are a few solutions to the self-locking doorknob problem and all start with a simple task: remove them! In place, install deadbolts and configure the door hardware so it is impossible for the door or latch to lock behind someone without a key. Here are some options that can be used to be sure your tenants remain secure without those problematic keyed privacy locks:
Install an entry door handle set on every exterior door.
This means when your tenant leaves, they will need to use a key to lock the door from the outside. No more lockouts by the self-looking door knob!
Go for the gusto and install smart key locks on all exterior doors.
This does cost a little more, but saves a lot of time and expense when it comes time to re-key or replace locks between renters. And of course, getting accidentally locked out because of self-locking doorknobs becomes a thing of the past.
